Indians Observe Thanksgiving Long Before Puritans
Several tribes of American Indians held Thanksgiving days before Puritans or white settlers arrived. Each autumn when food was abundant they set aside a day before severe cold to cook large quantities of vegetables and game and eat until satisfied. Some families overindulged and relied on neighbors for food as supplies depleted. Among the Cocaneechi of the Sioux, the head of each house feasted all others in turn.
