Narrow Escape for Portland Harpswell Boat Crew
A party of two Portland women and two men left Harpswell in an open boat bound for the city. A northeast storm battered the craft after 13 hours at sea. The rudder failed, they bailed constantly, and at Simonton’s Cove they waded ashore a half mile from land. Exposed and exhausted, they reached shelter, with some suffering from exposure.
