Henry Wilson Denounces Sumner Assault In Senate

An 1852 incident shows Senator Charles Sumner being attacked in the Senate chamber by P L Brooks after a speech on slavery and crime. Henry Wilson learned of the assault, rushed to Sumner, and drafted a dueling-rejecting response to Brooks while condemning the violence as brutal and cowardly. The episode drew broad North-South reaction amid fears of further conflict.

Trains Wrecked and Fatalities Reported Near Scranton

A Delaware Lackawanna and Western construction train derailed after striking a fallen boulder near Hampton crossing two miles from Scranton, plunging a caboose 190 feet into a creek. Several laborers died and many injured, with four possibly fatally hurt. A second accident on the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre line near the city caused one death and numerous injuries. Also included are unrelated items from New York and miscellaneous notes.
