Sheep Demonstrations Indicate Interest at Farm Trials

Four lamb and sheep demonstrations conducted last week at the farms of J A Dixon Murray Fleming Alex Bennett and Wm Davis show growing interest in better sheep management methods. County Agent Warner and Penn State sheep extension specialist W B Connell demonstrated docking castration drenching and shearing as well as tying wool with paper twine. Connell noted that un castrated lambs would be docked one cent per pound in the Pittsburgh market after mid June and condemned leaving tails on. He urged tying wool with flesh side out and warned binder twine is unsatisfactory. Drenching with nicotine sulphate or copper sulphate or both is shown as inexpensive and necessary. Special pastures for finishing lambs including rape pasture and red clover are advised. A rape pasture demonstration continues at Clyde Bell’s farm in South Mahoning with a June end visit planned. Wool prices have dipped but a rebound may come. wool stocks remain low as mills idle. Farmers Field Day at State College on June 14 will feature sheep improvement exhibits and demonstrations. full program available at the County extension office. Two Cleveland scientists announce a sun ultraviolet measurement device while a Dr Desiderius Papp predicts humans in 500 million years will be tall with a large head and no hair or teeth.
