State May Take Last White Pine Forest for Park
Harrisburg May 8 The Cook forest spanning Jefferson Forest and Clarion counties faces state purchase to become a large park. Supported by conservation groups and sportsmen, the 7419 acre tract hosts ancient white pines up to 250 feet tall and 150 feet branchless, with potential to rival Yellowstone and attract more visitors. Estimated value exceeds 1 million but supporters seek 700000, claiming the forest could fund maintenance and yield annual returns while preserving Penns Woods for future generations.
