Madonna of the Chair Painted on a Cask Top
Mentor Magazine recounts the legend behind the painting known as the Madonna of the Chair. A vine dresser and his daughter Mary aided a hermit whose oak sheltered his hut. After the hermit’s death, the oak was felled and turned into casks used by the vine dresser. Raphael sketched Mary with her child on a wine cask top, preserving the hermit’s prayer. The work, painted in the Vatican era, now hangs in the Pitti Palace Florence.
