Indiana County History Spurs Town Growth and Trade

Indiana, seat of Indiana County, traces its roots to 1764 with George Findley and settlers. The site chosen by George Clymer in 1805, central and well connected, spurred court buildings, a borough charter in 1816, and rapid growth. By 1922 Indiana boasted new schools, a State Normal, multiple banks, growing industries, and robust rail links with the BUffalo Rochester and Pittsburgh line boosting coal and commerce. The town focused on education, health, and infrastructure to become a regional hub.
