Long legal battle over coal sale won by local man
A ten year legal fight ended when the United States Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia sustained the lower court ruling in favor of Attorney Samuel A Williams of Wheeling against Pittsburgh Terminal Coal Corporation. Williams was awarded 142,600 dollars with interest to total about 150,000 for alleged breach of contract over 28,000 acres of coal in West Virginia. The case progressed from a Pittsburgh Federal Court verdict for the Coal Company to reversals, a retrial, and then Supreme Court and appellate decisions upholding Williams. Williams, a longtime Wheeling attorney, now resides with his mother Mrs Elizabeth Williams in Wheeling.
