Kent Will Reveals Confederate Claims and Seemingly Damned Gift
The Richmond Journal excerpts Horace D U Kent's will noting a daughter disloyal to the Lost Cause. He bequeaths Confederate bonds worth 25 000 dollars, 18 emancipated servants, insurance and bank stocks totaling 15 000 and claims against the Confederate Government for 200 000. He laments secession ruined his fortune, noting he could have left more to children otherwise. The deceased's wealth arose from a Northern mercantile family now based in Richmond.
