Lake Ontario, a historic and commercial waterway

Lake Ontario, the smallest in the chain of Great Lakes, spans 87 260 square miles and played a key role historically and commercially. Discovered around 1615 by Champlain and Brule, it was known as Lac des Iroquois and Ine St. Louis. Cartier and Champlain learned of it from Native peoples. Early explorers ascended its waters and La Salle may have built the first boat on the lake.
