Local Institute Notes at Diamondville February 1874

The Diamondville Teacher's Institute met February 27 with debates on school priorities. Topics included Bible use, arithmetic texts, and exhibitions. W C Mitchell led grammar drills. M M Trainer and others discussed penmanship and orthography. Adjourned to February 28 with plans for Greenville sessions.

Word to the Wise in Blairsville on Liquor and Local Option

Blairsville March 9 1874 residents urged readers to oppose liquor traffic. The column laments gossip and notes deaths and local quarrels, then argues for temperance and removal of liquor from the town. God and the Constitution Oppose Baptism of State Religion

The Senate Judiciary Committee reports against adding a clause recognizing Almighty God and the Christian religion to the Federal Constitution. It warns such a provision would distort church and state, provoke sectarian fights, threaten Hebrew and diverse Christian groups, and invite tyranny by enforcing a state religion. It urges learning from history to avoid religious governance in law.
