Old Gloria of the seas spared from wrecking by Boston memo
The clipper Glory of the seas, once queen of the American Merchant Marine, faced wrecking after being towed from Puget Sound for scrapping. Boston merchants urged a reprieve to tow her to Boston for restoration as a monument to sail ships. Built 1869 in East Boston, she linked New York and San Francisco and European routes before decaying to a coal barge and later a refrigeration plant. Shipping men say her hull remains sound.
