The First Impulse and the Eastern Saintly Tale
In Baghdad Turiri a wealthy man famed for mercy meets Maitreya the ascetic who grants a single day of every wish. Turiri’s acts trigger a fatal chain as beggars, courtesans, drivers, scholars, and even a playwright die after his benevolent impulses. Ormuzd judges Turiri’s will, rewarding him for goodness with paradise while forgiving Maitreya’s pride.

Newman Memorial church fund pledge denied by widow
A rumor claimed Mrs. Newman offered $30,000 to the First Methodist Episcopal church in Omaha to clear its debt if the church were renamed in Bishop John P. Newman’s memory. In a private letter she denied the report, saying she never offered such an amount and could only contribute $100 to the ladies. She noted her late husband’s prior gifts and questioned how the Drew students would continue their studies.
