Escape of Anthony Hollingsworth sparks Indiana county uproar

In 1845 Anthony Hollingsworth, a fugitive slave, was seized by Anthony Van Meteer and others near Phillips Mills. Sheriff David Ralston faced a hostile crowd in Indiana, while Dr Robert Mitchell and editor James Moorhead brokered a nightlong peace. A habeas corpus petition, supported by William Banks, led Judge Thomas White to order Hollingsworth’s release, celebrated by abolitionists and local youths.
