Over the Rockies A Western Letter From Denver to Salt Lake City

A travelogue recounts a May 18 departure from Denver by Union Pacific to Salt Lake City. It covers Cheyenne at 6,050 feet, Sherman Pass, Laramie as a wool market, a mountain lion tale, Rawlins and Rock Springs coal mines, and desert plains with antelope and wolves. The writer visits Salt Lake City, tours Mormon sites, and describes the Great Salt Lake vicinity, Brigham Young’s grave, Fort Douglass, Lake Aire, sea gulls, and the valley’s scenery before bidding farewell for Portland Oregon. The account includes impressions of the Mormon tabernacle, public services, and a visit to a Sabbath school, with reflections on Mormonism and loyalty to the U S Constitution. The piece ends with plans for the next letter from Portland.
