Curious Maine tale of a rare Dunton book

A Boston Advertiser letter recounts how A R Dunton of Belfast wrote an ardent early 19th century work, An Innocent Man In a Felon's Cell. The book, said to be widely destroyed by parties fearing slander, centers on a murder in Knox County and a logbook tying a man to the crime. Dunton exposed alleged conspiracies, faced attempts to ruin him, and saw volumes burned to keep the truth from surfacing.

Science in Building Bridges Shows Old Art, New Methods

A London Mail excerpt notes that bridge building combines ancient engineering with modern practice. It cites the earliest metal truss around 1840, a 320 foot Ohio River span in 1863, and current limits of 1710 feet with many designs reaching nearly 3000 feet. The piece also mentions the Baltimore Sun anecdote about twins Arthur and Reese Murray at dinner, one joking he has the dropsy.

Outspoken tales of envy and a glass repair trick

A BC man recalls a Wallace dinner feud between Haas Buck and Cheney, where Cheney exposed their rivalries with blunt words. The essay includes a second vignette about a tinker who repays a glazier by smashing a schoolhouse window, revealing the glazier’s sly leverage.

Quips and Curious Bits From An Old Paper

A collection of sharp wits and odd notes pulls from a bygone issue. Humorous exchanges about worry over a dress and a comic missing invitation show social quirks. Also a satirical note on Eskimos using teeth for work, with a punch line about mistaken address and a car departure.

Private Door Gilding Tale Sparks Wife Laughs

A New York picture dealer recalls an experiment: mark a gallery door with Private and note how women leave catalogs after signing. One untouched catalog becomes the joke when his future wife reveals she knew the gilding rubbed off and she had caught gloves. Also includes various ads and a humorous initiation tale from Youth's Companion.

Stops the Cough Works Off the Cold

Baltimore American notes the claim that a cough remedy cures a cold with guarantees. It mentions a laxative product and a dubious “Dreadful Dream” insomnia story about Bobbs Old Tidewadd fearing sleep and burglars, interweaving ad style and rumor.
