Long search rewarded as Civil War daguerreotype found owner

A daguerreotype taken on a Civil War battlefield at Chancellorsville has been returned after 33 years to Mrs. T. W. Stowe of Milford Connecticut. The photo showed a Union soldier and a girl identified as Nellie Augusta Nettigton, later Mrs. T. W. Stowe, whose husband John Rawson was reported missing after the battle. The photo’s recovery involved Edgar Wheitenour a mineral water manufacturer from Paterson and Hasthorn. The back bore the names John Rawson and Augusta Nettlegton. The case contained needle thread and a hair lock. Mrs. Stowe expressed gratitude for the search and restoration after decades. The daguerreotype was forwarded to Mrs. Stowe after identification photos were sent to Wheitenour.
