Work to Begin Now at Buffington in Coal Field Expansion
Active operations start immediately in the Blacklick creek coal field. The Lackawanna Iron & Steel Company plans 16,000 acres of mining, a Buffington coke oven complex, and a new mining town on Matthews farm. Railroad extension from Wintondale to Buffington to open the field will run four and a half miles, with a hoped early fall completion. County Surveyor Moorhead joins the company, Diamond drills test veins, and 400 coke ovens are planned near the old Blacklick furnace. The Ebensburg Branch will carry early fuel, with longer routes contemplated toward the lakes as mills rise in Buffalo. A full town and 1,000 jobs loom as Arcadia and Green township sites develop. The new mining boom centers on Buffington and Canoe townships as electricity and water works join the unfolding industry. Reverend Wilson leaves Western Theological to join Princeton Theological Seminary.
