The Million Dollar Cowpath of Chicago’s Loop
A 19th century deed granted a 10 foot easement for a cow named Bessie to walk from Bassett’s farm to the road. In 1925 a new office building rose above the path, blocking it but leaving a hidden air-right portal at 100 West Monroe. The court upheld the easement, preserving the ghost of the cow path and its potential value.
