The nation weighs candidate flowers for a national emblem with the laurel favored for its evergreen beauty and symbolic ties to triumph and freedom. Prominent women advocate the laurel, praising its American growth from coast to coast and its historic wreath associations, while noting other flowers fall short on color or meaning.
