A Big Runaway and a Bravest Friendship in India
Tom Raffles, a Norfolk-born gunner, enlists in India where drink and bad companions threaten his career. He befriends Bertie Stratford, son of Colonel Stratford, and when maddened elephants derail a royal review, Raffles saves Bertie at great risk. Though court martial looms, he is discharged and later earns the Victoria Cross in a later skirmish, crediting Bertie for his turn from ruin.
