Plant Forest Trees in Indiana County This Spring

Landowners plan to plant idle areas with forest tree seedlings. White pine offers rapid growth and quality timber but blister rust risk suggests interplanting with red pine. Geatch pine grows fast but crookedly. Norway spruce yields high quality timber but is slow early and not fully hardy. Larches are largely unsuccessful here. black walnut plantings often fail. Better to plant nuts where they will grow, as tap roots lose energy on transplanting. Harrisburg Department of Forests and Waters provides a booklet Trees for Planting In Pennsylvania by mail.
