District Attorney Elkin Undergoes Gall Stone Operation
District Attorney W. F. Elkin of town was taken to Pittsburg last evening and underwent an operation at Mercy hospital for gall stones. Mr Elkin fell ill Saturday night. Dr W D Gates, his physician, urged immediate surgery. Dr Stewart from Pittsburgh arrived yesterday. it was decided to move him to the city hospital for the operation.

Conrad Pifer the sole veteran of the Mexican and Civil wars in the city died Saturday night at his son William Pifer’s home in Rochester Mills. Born near Harrisburg in 183? he served three enlistments and earned a 20 day furlough for being the best soldier in the First Division of the Twenty fourth Army Corps. He enlisted for the Mexican War in fall 1846 and endured a 36 day voyage to Vera Cruz with heavy losses among soldiers. The march toward Mexico City followed Chapultepec two miles west of the capital amid extreme heat.
