Soil Conservation Projects Spread Across Pennsylvania Farms
The Soil Conservation Service launched demonstrations in Pennsylvania since 1934, with projects at Indiana Vandergrift Lancaster and Waynesboro and CCC camps at Sprankles Mills Sligo Lancaster Glen Rock Todd and Waynesboro. By now 724 farmers signed agreements covering 78182 acres, fencing out grazing on 4547 woodland acres and planting seedlings on 2468 acres. Diversion ditches totaling 200628 feet were built to curb runoff. Strip cropping began on 22776 cropland acres with grass, small grain and crops arranged along slopes. Visitors learned how measures protect soils from washing into streams.
