Plain Hoosier farmer tops famed ear of corn tale

An Indiana grower, Fred C. Palin, known as a top corn judge, recalls his modest start on a rented 360 acre farm near Newtown. Despite international recognition for growing the Kellogg Trophy ear, Palin remains a plain farmer with deep pride in his achievements and encouragement for fellow growers.

The Champion Ear of Corn and Palin's Seed Craft

Palin, a Purdue trained farmer, developed the champion ear of corn after nine years of selective breeding. He explains how careful seed selection, detasseled rows, and deliberate propagation led to the prize ear that won the W. K. Kellogg National Corn Trophy. The next national exposition, planned for February 1914 in Columbia, will showcase broader exhibits with substantial state support from South Carolina.
