In 1846 Brigham Young’s Mormon wagon trains moved slowly across the plains. William Clayton marked a mile on the trail and built a wheel gauge to count distance, a principle that evolved into modern speedometers. A Western Newspaper Union feature urges car safety checks.

They birth seven to eleven young at a time, with newborns resembling mice and remaining in the pouch weeks. Mature opossums reach about 15 inches, with a 12 inch prehensile tail.
A Cleveland Plain Dealer account notes the May 31, 1880 dam break at Conemaugh Lake unleashed a vast wall of water. It devastated Johnstown and caused rail and flood damage across Pennsylvania and neighboring states with thousands killed or injured and property losses around 12.6 million dollars. Warning came from railroad officials but was ignored.

In Lewisville a church schedule lists Sunday school at 10 16 and worship at 11 15. Rev Prugh of Bethel preached at Ebenezer last Sunday and dined with O W Shields. Mr and Mrs J L Diven return from Beaver Valley. Ebenezer Women’s Missionary Society met for an all day sewing gathering at Mrs Alice Ewing’s home with several attendees.
