Runaway Slaves From Virginia Reach Indiana In 1844

A historic narrative details the escape of three Virginia enslaved people via the underground railway. Charlie Brown and Garret Harris, both belonging to Mr. Van Meteer, and Anthony Hollingsworth traveled north in September 1844, landing at an Indiana station October 28. Charlie, once a favored house servant with access to family activities, pursued literacy after overhearing his mistress’s and father’s warnings about teaching slaves to read. His growing curiosity fueled plans for freedom, amid a background of plantation discipline, family dynamics, and the risk of being sold south if crops failed.
