Century Start Debated From Rome to Baltimore Sun

The article traces a long historical debate over the start of the seventh century after Rome’s founding, noting figures like Certo, Serpio, Cato the elder, and Scipio the younger. It moves through Roman records to modern echoes in 1600 Germany and late 18th–early 19th century Germany, ending with Goethe and Schiller’s shifts amid celebratory quarrels and champagne at year’s end.

Malibran’s Norma Moment At Villa Pamphili

In autumn 1832 at Rome Malibran ended a long silence by singing Casta Diva atop a marble platform at the Villa Pamphili. Morace Vernet and Louise Vernet Berry watched as the fountain, sunlight, and garden setting heightened her performance, bringing tears to the observers. The piece notes this dramatic revival described by Cornhill Magazine.
