How Minority Presidents of U S May Be Elected

The Indianapolis News explains that a president can win the office without a majority of nationwide popular votes because electors, not direct popular ballots, elect the president. States allocate electoral votes by state, usually winner take all, so multiple candidates can yield a majority of electors despite a national popular vote minority. Historical examples include Adams, Polk, Taylor, Buchanan, Lincoln, Hayes, Garfield, Cleveland, Harrison, and Wilson, with split results in several elections.
