Lightning risk shown by oak trees in open habitats
Weather Bureau notes that oak trees with wide or deep root systems are strong lightning conductors and at higher risk. Open stands, moist banks increase danger while dense timber and chalky soils reduce it. Elm ash poplar and gum are also susceptible, chestnut maple alder and mountain ash less so.
