Fatal Mine Explosion Claims Eleven Workers at Jefferson Mine
A blast at Mine No 2 of the Jefferson and Clearfield Coal and Iron Company near the mine’s rear entombed eleven workers, many foreign born and well to do, after rescuers labored through the night to reach them. One survivor, Andy Krascar, described the explosion. Mike Harrington, a popular motorman, was among the dead. Rescue efforts faced lethal fumes. authorities closed the No 2 mine and prepared for inquests into the Chambersville and related incidents as wills and executors are also noted in later reports.

Contract Awarded for Hammers Memorial in Oakland Cemetery
The Hammers Memorial Association awarded the contract for a granite monument to R B Young for the grave of A M Hammers in Oakland Cemetery Indiana County. The $600 stone, to be erected by teachers and friends of education, should be completed by Memorial Day with unveiling ceremonies planned.

Col W R Andrews chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican state committee and secretary to Senator Penrose and the senate committee on post offices and post roads died at 8:15 a m four weeks after leaving his desk at the capitol He remained conscious and clear minded nearly to the end and was reportedly in cheerful mood at midnight before his death.

Fire and cold: water pipe bursts in Farmers Bank building
On the coldest day of winter a hot water pipe in the Farmers Bank building burst, flooding the justice’s office above Squire Crossman and forcing furniture and papers to be moved. The incident damaged Langham and Elkin and H. E. Anderson’s second-floor offices, prompting removal of valuables. Pensions were issued to district residents Henry Shankle, Joseph Moore, William Bartley, and others, with amounts ranging from 12 to 24 dollars.
