Profitable Cow Needs 7694 Pounds Milk Yearly, Study Says

Pennsylvania State College dairy economists analyze Indiana County No 2 Cow Testing Association data 1918-1929 showing average cow must yield about 7,694 pounds of 3.8 percent butterfat to cover feed, care, interest and other costs. The report notes many farms fail to track costs, leading to hidden losses. better producers exceed 7,000 pounds per cow and cull below-standard animals. Costs are broken down into feed, labor, and other expenses with a milk price of 3.03 dollars per hundredweight, 16 cents below the cost of production.
