Many Mines Closing Down Amid Slump in Coal Demand
Following the armistice, urgent demand for bituminous coal fell sharply. The decrease started in the Midwest and spread to Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, and West Virginia before Central Pennsylvania mines shut down. Officials say the readjustment could last months to over a year, with production losses around 2.2 million tons for the week ending January 11. A few mines like Idamar Coal Company in Indiana County maintain contracts to remain active for several years.
