Trimmings in Capitol Furnishings Case Highlight Trial
In Hartsburg Pennsylvania on February 1 the defense resistance fades as the commonwealth reveals over three million dollars in furnishings bills paid to contractor John H. Sanderson for the new state capitol. The case names former State Treasurer Mathues former Auditor General Snyder and James M. Shumaker. Evidence includes Sanderson invoices stored in Snyder’s private safe and a batch of bills withdrawn the day after submission. The commonwealth plans to introduce more papers and furniture, such as a bootblack stand, to illustrate alleged fraud. The trial resumes next Monday with the jury warned to avoid discussion of the case or related articles.
