Pennsylvania Remains A Leading Buckwheat State And Potatoes
Pennsylvania maintains a high ranking in buckwheat and potatoes despite a production drop of over a million bushels. It now ranks third in potato production behind Maine and New York, up from sixth last year, with North Carolina leading sweet potato output. The state also ranks seventh in tobacco, while apples from Pennsylvania orchards rival Oregon Washington and California. Wheat and grain yields are lower than last year, with flour consumption at 6.2 bushels per person and a state crop shortfall of 25.57 million bushels. About 30 percent of potatoes are shipped out each year, and honey production per bee colony averaged 54 pounds. Harvest timing for potatoes peaks in September and October.
