County Institute Opens With Strong Attendance Despite Weather
The 51st county institute opened with 300 of 314 teachers present as cold, stormy weather kept many visitors away. Sessions featured Dr Swartz Crawford, Rev G T Reynolds, Prof H D Condron, and Prof C M Parker with music and lectures on individuality, globe use in geography, and the teacher as a citizen. Reverend J M Welch led devotional rites and Dr E T Hagerman delivered a valued lecture at Library Hall.

Stockholders of the Pennsylvania Anchor Oil and Gas Company, tied to Indiana investors, report a favorable early drill in Barbourville Kentucky. Well No 1 reached 1584 feet and produced oil up to 500 feet depth with no salt water. Oil quality compares to Pennsylvanian illuminating crude, with conservative production around 25 barrels daily. A second and third wells planned, leases added to 1100 acres, total holdings now 3000 to 4000 acres. December Court Ends With Settlement In Rochester Case
Criminal court closed on Wednesday after the Commonwealth versus John H. Rochester for aggravated assault and battery and assault and battery. The defendant paid court costs and $100 to the prosecutor and was released from further liability. The court recessed to Saturday and then to next Saturday for sentenced announcements. Indiana Falls to Pittsburg South Side in Key Clash
Indiana Athletic Association’s basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season at Pittsburg against the South Side club before about 800 fans. South Side led 20 to 10 at halftime and won 32 to 19, with Moorhead scoring for Indiana and Lsihau opening the scoring for South Side. The home crowd praised the hospitality after the game. Earlier, Indiana beat Manchester 33 to 12 on the Pittsburg floor, and also defeated the Indiana Juniors 29 to 10 while Yale College may visit January 5 for a league game against Indiana’s talent.

Tragic Death by Self Inflicted Fire at Rossi ter Colliery
John Davis a check weighman at Rossiter colliery in Rossi ter county died by his own hand Thursday morning. He hid his act by firing a revolver beneath bed clothes after wrapping himself to muff le sound and setting the bed clothes ablaze. Davis 36 left a bank account transfer to his eight year old son one month earlier, and investigators found the room smoking before anyone discovered the scene.
