Dairymen urged to weigh feed for profit and efficiency

County Agent Warner warns dairymen against cutting protein too far in feeds as milk prices lag. Proper protein levels depend on hay quality, ranging from 16 to 24 percent. Weigh milk and grain daily, aim for about one pound grain to 3 1/2 pounds milk, with adjustments by butterfat. Many farmers mix own rations with high protein supplements amid abundant grain. A pamphlet Feeding the Dairy Cow by R. H. Olmstead is available from the Extension office.
