In a small town Ratty and Slinky plan a return to a home they once shared. A moonlit church cross and Christmas promise steer them toward a chance at decency and a future that may finally feel like Christmas. Martha Banning Thomas.
A pilot named Bill Parker fights vicious storms in the Betsy Lee, climbing from 10 000 to 20 000 feet to push through clouds and ice. He battles wind and lightning, fearing a crash, then reaches a calm night and resolves to press on home for Christmas in a daring, solitary voyage.
Hampshire mummers perform a Christmas play said to be 1000 years old with no written script. The laborers wear costumes of colored wallpaper and present the play at Christmas time. Also notes on a joke between Snake and Leopold about coats and shedding. Christmas salads feature gelatin designs in green or red for festive plates.
Mrs. Clarence McGraw and Mrs. John McGraw were Christmas shoppers in Johnstown. Ben Riddell of Evans City visited his father Andrew Riddell. Mr. and Mrs. Betts and family hosted friends from Derry and Ligonier and Pittsburgh guests. Husbands, wives, and friends visited in Johnstown and Latrobe. Harry Domineck planned a winter in Miami working at the Flamingo hotel. Lutheran Bible class ladies quilt at Mrs Crolls. Mrs. Guy Sullinger and Mrs. Wilbert Mack visited New Florence. Mrs C C Shaffer returned home from Steubenville after visiting her son and family. Mrs Millie Reeze visited relatives in Punxsutawney. Mr and Mrs Henry Tost called on friends at Reynoldsville. Paul Olson moved to the Olson property on Main Street. Mr and Mrs Leonard and daughter Joan spent weekend with Mr and Mrs C M Boyer in Indiana. Mae Bowser of Parkers Landing visited his brother D Bowser. Kenneth Bailey spent weekend with relatives at Reynoldsville. John Delancey of NuMine called on his sister Mrs Minnie Pierce. Mrs Wm Moore and Mrs Clyde Moore shopped in Indiana Tuesday.
Maple Grove social roundup lists Forrest voy and Unaimers Decker visiting Sloppy home Monday evening. G R Waltemire and Mrs Waltemire visited Dick Fair at Indiana Sunday while Victor Brown visited Johnstown Saturday. Geraldine Jones attended a show in Ebensburg Saturday evening and Detwiler family visited friends at Cresson Sunday. Howard Willard of Indiana visited Sloppy home Saturday, Forrest Coy attended Love Joy church Sunday.
Local clubs held gatherings including a Rebekah Christmas party at I C C F hall and a Civic club event at the Methodist church annex. The Armagh high school band performed at Palmers theatre and a Braddock colored church quartet planned a Presbyterian church entertainment. Indiana shoppers Sara Porter and Sue Cruckinol were noted shoppers. Mrs Gould visited Kane hospital patient husband. Good Will club hosted at Dr and Mrs Bushnell. Lula Pooh quotes a playful poem about joy of love amid local social life and a paid notice for the Progress and Pittsburgh Poet- Gazette readers.
