Thurston Orphans' Home Memorial Fund Initiated in New York
A movement to raise funds for a memorial orphan asylum in Cuba, named for Mrs. Thurston, wife of Senator John M. Thurston, began at the Miaison Avenue Presbyterian church under the Thurston Memorial Association. General Vander Vroot of Nebraska pledged land for the institution, with speakers Mrs. G. E. Andrews of Evans Lake New Jersey and others noting the memorial as fitting after Mrs. Thurston’s death, believed due to a broken heart from witnessing Cuban conditions.
