Cramer Builds Coal Mines and Charcoal Trade at Cramer

Joseph Cramer, a leading East Wheatfield merchant, drives a coal company on 3000 acres along the Conemaugh with beds Lemon and Miller tapped by shafts and a 900 foot drift. The venture, tied to the West Penn extension, aims to ship coal east and later coke. Cramer’s long career includes charcoal manufacture, lumber mills, and a store network, with a family business now valued at about 100000 dollars. Mrs. Martha Rodgers, the town’s oldest resident, recalls George Findley’s frontier tale of Findley’s Escape from Indian pursuit near Palmer’s fort in Ligonier Valley.
