Fatal Porch Toss After Whiskey Fire Disaster

A family tragedy occurred in Gipsy County when a kerosene mix up caused a blast that burned Daniel Smith, 74, after he tossed his sleeping grandson Harold Lowman from a second story window onto a porch roof to escape flames. The boy was unharmed aside from burns to the hands, while Mrs. Smith survived away from the blaze. A neighbor carried the boy to safety as smoke filled the home. The grandfather perished in the fire despite attempts to save him. The blast began when David John McCracken, awakening early, used a can of liquid he mistook for kerosene to start a kitchen fire, triggering an explosion and spreading flames through the second floor. Survivors include five children and several grandchildren.
