New Rail Highway Truck Demonstrates Dual-Mode Travel
Akron built for General Transportation Company of Boston, a 24 by 8 by 10 foot dual mode truck traveled from Akron to Altoona on an experimental run using rubber tires and steel railway wheels. Deflated tires let steel wheels ride tracks with flexible treads avoiding switch damage, front wheels locked, no steering on rails, then pumped up to resume road travel. Speed capped at 60 mph on rails but run held to 26 mph. After Altoona the vehicle proceeded to Philadelphia New York and Boston. Fern Lowman of Clarksburg named state scholarship winner for 1934 county high school seniors, awarded $100 yearly for four years and $180 Westminster College scholarship. The Progress extends congratulations.
