More than 48 farms totaling over 9 000 acres in the Crooked Creek watershed are included in a soil conservation project by the Federal Soil Conservation Service. Plans call for treating 1 128 acres, retiring 836 to permanent pasture, 409 to permanent hay, and 350 to forest, with strip cropping on 38 609 acres. A rainfall example near Indiana showed 60 tons of soil washed from a four acre field, prompting terracing and contour farming. First 20 signing farmers listed include Roy McElhoes, John W Warner, Joseph J McElhoes, and others from Marion Center, Creekside, Home, Indiana, and more. Seventy four thousand acres, two thirds of the project, have been surveyed so far.
