Civil War Veteran Jeremiah Cook Visits Green Township Roots
Jeremiah Cook, 76, of Pittsburgh and Civil War veteran with a unique record, returned to his boyhood Green township area for the first notable visit in nearly fifty years. He enlisted in 1861 with his grandfather Matthias Bartlebaugh in Company D, 78th Pennsylvania, serving three years before discharge for illness. Cook is said to be the sole surviving veteran who enlisted with his grandfather among four similar pairings nationwide. He later settled in Pittsburgh in 1871 and, despite long absence, now notes only the familiar hills and valleys amid major coal development transforming the county.
