John Frederick Hartranft, born December 16 1830 in New Hanover township Montgomery County PA, pursued law after engineering studies, and served as a militia colonel at start of Civil War. He led the 4th Pennsylvania, fought at Bull Run Chantilly South Mountain Antietam and Roanoke Island, later under Grant at Vicksburg before a disabling stroke.
