Romance of a Civil War Sentinel Is Questioned

The Sleeping Sentinel tale is challenged as legend not fact. The Vermont soldier was 22, not a lad, and five months in camp instead of marching. Lincoln did not directly pardon after a court martial led by McClellan era. Union leaders confirmed no intended execution. The piece cites Burlington Free Press and notes Lincoln’s mercy but insists truth matters more than romance. Also a comparative note on oratory from Athens to Demosthenes, per Thomas B. Reed in Saturday Evening Post.
