In 1805 near the Kaskanomoke river a backwoodsman Norton and his young wife Mary host settlers. Rival Ned Byrne loves Mary. Mike Redmond plots, but a lightning strike kills Mike before he can strike. Byrne shoots at Mary from a tree, hitting her as a wild cat is slain. Byrne later dies fishing with a marriage license found on his chest.
