Madison Breaks Ground on Gaines Park Renovation Plan
A downtown Madison groundbreaking on Wednesday launches a major Gaines Park revitalization planned for completion by Labor Day. The site at 628 Broadway, formerly Broadway School, holds historic meaning for Black Madisonians educated there 1880 to 1957 and is hoped to revitalize the neighborhood playground once plagued by flooding and limited facilities. Local resident Sue Livers recalled the park’s evolution from schoolyard to safe community space and welcomed the project as overdue.
