After a heated duel of misdeeds Fink shoots Carpenter dead, is suspected of murder, and faces denouncing gunsmith Talbott. Fink later confronts Talbott showing restraint while neighbors debate his guilt. The Oregon and Washington territory notes follow, including new laws on arson spirits, the arrival of Belgian priests, and Oregon’s hopeful settlement expansion.
Talbot threatened Fink with pistols and fired as Fink stepped inside. Fink collapsed from both shots while muttering he did not mean to kill his boy. Talbot later died crossing the Missouri river in a skiff.
Platte City Argus notes a larger Texas emigration to Oregon, with two state cannons loaned to the company. It advises emigrants to assemble at Independence by late April, travel light, buy necessities en route in Oregon, use strong wagons, bring biscuits bacon rifles and ammunition, and avoid whiskey. Oxen or horses acceptable. Independence lies 400 miles above St. Louis and reachable weekly by steamboat when navigation opens.
