Wealthy bachelor Newton brothers perished in Indiana fire

William and John Newton, aged 75 and a younger brother, were burned in the home one mile west of Porrano Indiana. A neighbor found the blaze but could not save them. John’s body lay in the cellar, while only bones remained of the other. The scene contained chairs and papers amid ash. No foul play found. William Newton was among the state’s wealthiest men with an estate around 1.5 million. Both men were noted for eccentric frugality.
